Comments on Le Haut Genet Bikers

June 2023 - Tim Bolton

"Eight of us spent three nights at Le Haut Genet last weekend before moving up to the Normandy beaches as part of a five day tour to Normandy and Brittany.

The Bikers Retreat was exactly what we wanted, good accommodation, well located, undercover bike parking, excellent home cooked food with wine as well as a beer fridge for when we got back after the days riding. Mick & Ruth were excellent hosts and the layout and location of Le Haut Genet meant that there was enough space for people to have their own time as well as being part of the wider group.

The weather was very good whilst we were staying so we didn’t really use the Bikers Barn, however having an undercover social area for when the weather is less clement is another big plus.

Le Haut Genet is excellent value for money and is highly recommended!”

Myself and a group of 4 friends visited The Biker Barn ( AKA Le Haut Genet) recently, we were met on arrival by Mick with a cool refreshing beverage in hand for each of us. This was to set the mood and scene for the following week.

We experienced very well equipped, comfortable, homely accommodation and a very genial host/Chef, to refer to Mick’s food as mere “cooking” feels like a disservice to the standard of food produced. Mick’s knowledge of the area helped us get the most from our week at LHG.

I highly recommend LHG as a great place to visit either as a group of bikers or as a friends and family holiday location, we will surely visit again.

After a number of years touring different parts of Europe traveling from location to location everyday, either camping or staying in hotels. We decided on something different and stay in one location and just have a more relaxed bike tour and not keep to planed route and have different ride outs each day. After a recommendation from a member of our groups friend we settled on the LHG. We where not disappointed with our choice.

The owner and host "Mad Mick" organised our visit with such military precision it would have put many a NATO exercise to shame. With all five in our party being all ex military we all could appreciate this. Mick's eyes never rolled once when he heard another "When I was story". From the food questioner to the menu planning he had it down to a fine art, managing to conjure up amazing evening meals that catered for all tastes.

The accommodation is rustic style and is a a labour of love for our host. The large barn with the most importantly a beer fridge was great for relaxing and watching the World Cup. His honesty bar system works really well and as fast as you drink it Mick can fill it. The sleeping arrangements worked well and the showers where great. Our visit was during the heat wave with temperatures hitting 30 degrees so a lot of time was spent chilling about the large well kept garden.

Each day we rode out and visited various must see places from Mont Saint-Michel to the Normandy Landing beaches there are plenty of places to ride to. Mick is more than happy to provide ideas and even has a few tried and tested routes. The condition of the roads was great had plenty of twist and turns to keep the grin factor going. Not quite the Alps or the Pyrenees but good fun all the same.

So in summery, if your looking for a relaxing time away with mates or as couples. And some good biking roads I thoroughly recommend LHG. And to top it off you have "Mad Mick" to cook and do all the washing up.

We have continued to talk about our trip to France and thoroughly enjoyed our stay with you. Your hospitality  was very welcome and we thoroughly enjoyed the food!!!  I was pleased to hear that you had purchased the kettle and cooker for other guests now to make themselves a cup of tea/coffee, and was glad my comment didn't offend. (Mick - no chance, a constructive comment) So it was back to work after a memorable time away in France where there was good riding, company, food and wine.

We had a great time at LHG. Had some great days out and rode some fantastic roads.

It is a lovely place but very isolated. The peace and quiet was nice though.

A great holiday though Mick and I am sure we will return again.

We all three arrived back home safely. Thanks for the warm welcome and great home cooked food, I'm sure I've put on a couple of pounds!  I can speak for Tom & Chris when I say we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at LHG & would highly recommend it to any discerning biker.

We came across some fantastic roads in the area combined with stunning scenery, it's a shame we couldn't have spent a couple of more days but maybe next time.

Value for money? 10/10.

Hospitality?  10/10.

Another fab stay at Le Haut Genet!

Me and a few mates on a motorcycle weekend tour stayed here for 3 nights. Mick is an excellent host and a keen biker himself. Accommodation is clean and tidy, with secure parking for your bike, and a Bike Barn/club room out the back for beer and chillaxing, the cold beer was really welcome after a long ride.

Breakfast was fresh and filling and Mick was an excellent host, evening meals were wholesome and well made. Mick offering us tips on where to ride and visit. The local roads are fantastic and we spent most of our time riding them. We had sunshine for the duration of our stay which was a great bonus, and at night time the the night sky was magnificent.

But Le Haut Genet is more than just a very good B&B. It's better. It's a proper, genuine, bike-focused place. From great riding roads to route advice, everything you need for a riding holiday is there - but the difference, again, is down to the people. LHG isn't just happy to have motorcyclists visit; this is a place run by a motorcyclist - and somehow, that makes a difference. You're more than just a guest: you're a fellow biker.......... practically part of the family.

I've stayed here several times now and will be returning.

MS Oct 2013

Mick's note - Oktoberfest worked well! Glad you enjoyed the visit.

 May/June 2013 - a witty ditty!

There is a barn

Near Landivy

They call Le Haut Genet

It’s not the ruin of you or me

In truth it’s great in May

The Bikers Barn is perfect

The beer and food and wine

And winding roads round Normandy

For bikers are just fine

So bikers tell your friends now

This is the place to stay

With rides and brilliant catering

Down at Le Haut Genet

Mick's note - a man of many talents! Thanx for your ode. I am considering running "introduction to rural poetry" courses.......... Any takers?

Feedback:

Having just returned from my second visit to Le Haut Genet, just a quick word of thanks for your fantastic hospitality! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - after a hearty breakfast and a full day making the most of the superb roads, it was great to come back to some home cooking in such relaxing surroundings. I'll definitely be recommending LHG to anyone heading to France on their bike!

Ed

Mick's note - well after you have read this what's stopping you booking?! I enjoyed catering for your party.

May 2013

For me it's almost perfect biking holiday, really is my type of place. The positioning is ideal for beautiful biking roads, the accommodation is comfortable, welcoming and friendly. It's not often that places really live up to expectations but you certainly did! Not to mention the upkeep of my cheese addiction...

Frances.

Mick's note - cheese Grommit! Glad you enjoyed it. Recommend us to others!

LHG Review by Peter Hopwood on August 29, 2012

I've been a couple of times, once with a group and once with my wife, and the welcome was terrific. The standard of just about everything was really great. Mick can talk for England about the region, about biking, about the meaning of life---------He really is the most genial of hosts. The food and wine provided was second to none, as is the location. I liked it so much that three of us geriatric bikers are off there again this weekend, 1st September for a week. Try it, you'll love it. How he does it at the price I don't know.

Mick's note: - thanks for the feedback Oppy. Well, we had a great week in September and explored a new eating place or two. Geriatric starts when you hit your 8th decade. Before that just maturing nicely into grumpy old men!!! Hope you come again soon.

June 2012

Every year four of us get together and plan a week's motorcycle tour either at home or abroad. This year we decided to visit the Normandy area of France with the sole intention of visiting the  'beaches' , museums and cemeteries. All of us have either served or are still serving with the armed forces.

Flicking through MCN, an advertisement caught our eye and after a brief phone call with 'Mad Mick', our accommodation with inclusive dinner/breakfast was secured. Upon our arrival at LHG, we were greeted by Ruth and Mick with a cold beer and welcoming smile. This set the tone for the entire week. That evening, and every other evening, we dined outside to a sumptuous 3 course meal with wine listening to nothing but the sounds of the French country-side before adjourning to the 'Bikers Barn'. The barn is a fantastic additional feature allowing you to either chat the evening away or watch a dvd (both motorcycle related and non related titles are available!). The barn is additionally equipped with a pool table and honesty bar.

We awoke every morning to either a full English breakfast or French croissants and 'Pain au Chocolat' with lashings of coffee and fruit juice. The rooms are clean and tidy, and there was plenty of hot water for showers after a long days riding.

I would highly recommend LHG for both couples and small parties of bikers who are keen, not only to explore the Normandy area but to just get away from it all. It was excellent value, the food plentiful and nothing was too difficult for Mick or Ruth to organise. Our group had a fantastic time and thought it ideal. Rest assured we will be returning in the future to this little spot of Britain nestling in the Normandy countryside."

Mick's note - enjoyed every minute of your company

20th and 28th of May 2012

Between 20th and 28th of May 2012 my wife and I had the opportunity to venture on a French holiday. We had been before and had the choice of a number of accommodation sites. LHG came up on the agenda after reading the MCN, so we thought we might take a chance. We contacted "mad" Mick Roberts and his wife Ruth on the website and opened up a total new experience. Brilliant roads suggested by Mick, wonderful breakfasts prepared and served by Mick, and the evening meals and wines were absolutely superb. Mick and Ruth care about their guests and being bikers themselves offer all necessary requirements including breakdown services if needed, also safe and dry accommodation for everyone’s trusty steeds. They go the extra mile to make sure your stay is a great one. A truly wonderful experience and we will be back. Thank you to both of you. Les & Olwen.

Mick's note - thanks for coming, being so easy to look after, and tidying my barn after the roof repair! Windy beginining of May. New storage area built too.

M+C May 2012 - Wales

thank you for a very enjoyable stay and making us feel so much at home. A very good nights sleep with only the sound of the birds to wake us up. See you in the future.

Mick's note - thanks for showing me the front wheel clamp. I have just ordered and received  one. Just got to bolt it to the bike trailer now!

MS Nov 2011 - Peterborough

I arrived at Bikers Retreat Le Haut Genet on a miserable wet Thursday afternoon to a very warm welcome by Mick its owner who is a passionate biker himself and knows what bikers want in the way of how he manages the accommodation. If you're planning a trip in France then pencil this place in as it offers all you need as a biker.

The place is clean and friendly, and the food is great and with large open wood burning fires throughout, there is secure parking in a large out building (not that you need it) and workshop facilities for those unexpected repairs, and a fantastic "Biker Barn" which houses a pool table, Games etc + large screen TV with a supply of biker films to sit back and enjoy a beer from the honesty fridge and natter with friends after a hard days riding. If its a busy night life your after then forget it, as the place is several miles away from the local towns, this is where the "biker barn" comes in.

Mick offers extensive local knowledge of biker routes for the surrounding beautiful area of rural France and is easy reach of all the Normandy beaches and the lovely Loire Valley and all its Vineyards.

I stayed for 4 days on this occasion and will be back.

Mick's note - yes we fixed the gear lever linkage! Beemer maintenance easy peasy lemon squeezy.

LHG Bikers Comments October 2011

Your accommodation and hospitality were excellent, ideal as our base for touring the local area, where we found, with the help of your predetermined tour routes, some exciting twisties to explore and enjoy. It is a pleasure to do a day’s touring on good quality roads without the volumes of traffic experienced in the U.K.

Starting the day with your superb full English breakfast and returning to a excellent four course evening meal without the hassle of having to find somewhere to eat made the weekend all the more relaxing and enjoyable. The biker barn being the icing on the cake where we could relax, chat and watch the TV or a film over a couple of beers.

Peter R

Mick's note - I really enjoyed cooking for your party as you were so appreciative.

A very warm welcome,  a secure and relaxing base from which to travel and witness the

local scenery and to explore just some of the rich history and culture that

France has to offer.

Return to base after a long day in the saddle to be welcomed home by your

perfect hosts to a hot meal and a complementing glass of local wine or beer to

ease you gently back into the tranquil surrounding.

 Ian P  Aug 2011

A fantastic base to enjoy your biking holiday in Central, Northern France and

beyond.  Hit the French B roads for quiet relaxing scenic rides. Mick your host

Will be more than happy to point you in the right direction and what a fantastic

host, nothing is too much trouble. If you get a clear night sky I recommend

after enjoying your meal, sit back relax, drink some good French wine and enjoy

the banter with your friends under the stars.

 Gary P

Mick's note - Basil Fawlty has a lot to answer for!!!!

LHG is situated in wonderful countryside with great roads for motorbiking and

within easy reach of ferry ports. The accommodation is comfortable and  Mick has

a number routes in the area to show off the beautiful countryside.

LHG is a fabulous place to relax after a day’s riding, watching the stars and

chilling with a glass (or 2) of the local wine. There is also space to do a bit

of "fettling" as I had to resolve problems with the starter motor, Mick managed

to assist with a brew at the right time!

 Ken C      June 2011

Mick's note - photo of repair to bendix on starter motor is on website. Beemers do not go wrong,

just need a tickle here and there like trout!
